Dycourts School, Harold Hill, The One Opposite The School Her Majesty Visited

Back in October 2012, the Queen came to Havering and visited Drapers Academy.  This is a brand new state of the art school which was formally known as Kingswood.  I remember back in 2008 when my eldest son was given a place at Kingswood.  I was devastated and there was no way that I was going to let him go there.  The school had a terrible record.  I have to say that it is wonderful how thie school has turned around and the new building is very impressive.

In Settle Road Harold Hill there are two other schools, Pyrgo primary school and Dycourts School for children with moderate learning difficulties which caters for children from ages 4 to 16.

Both of these schools were due to be part of the learning village and were due to have new builds just like Drapers Academy.  The plans were passed but sadly the funding was withdrawn.

I visited Dycourts school on Tuesday.  It is at the very bottom of Settle Road and opposite Drapers Academy.  As I approached the school if it had not been for the fact that there were cars in the car park I would have thought that this building had been abandoned and empty for years.  I was shown around by the Head Teacher Mr Wroe and a member of the teaching staff.  I have to say that I was so impressed with all the members of staff that I spoke to.  They are doing such a wonderful job helping children with special needs to prepare for the outside world.  I must stress that the school is clean and there are no safety concerns.  However the conditions in the school can only be described as abysmal.  Some of the buildings are crumbling away.  The school kitchen looks like something that you would see in a history lesson.  There is so much work that needs to be done and the children and staff deserve a much better conditions to learn and teach in.

I raised this issue with the Leader of the council Cllr Michael White at the Havering community questions meeting, please see below,

Havering Community Questions

The 26 October 2012 was a very special day for the residents of Havering.  Her Majesty the Queen came to visit Drapers Academy, the jewel in Havering's crown.  The turnaround of the once failing Kingswood secondary school is something that I am sure that this administration is very proud of and quite rightly to.  In the very same road as Drapers Academy is Dycourts School.  This is a school for children with moderate learning difficulties from ages 4 to 16.  It was described by in a ECM mark assessment in 2011 as being a "remarkably child centered school".

Back in 2010 it was announced that Dycourts school was going to be part of the "learning village" under the Harold Hill Ambitions programme.  This would have meant a brand new building for this school and nearby Pyrgo primary school.  Unfortunately, since these plans were passed the funding has now been withdrawn.

This school was built in the 1950's and is now in an extremely poor state.  I visited the school today and was shown around by the Headmaster Mr Wroe and a member of the teaching staff.  This school is doing such a wonderful job supporting and teaching children with special needs.  It was so sad to witness the condition of the actual school.  A school that is situated so close to the lovely new state of the art Drapers Academy and now seems to have been forgotten by this administration.

Cllr White, may I suggest that you visit this school in order that you are able to witness firsthand the wonderful work that they do.  I would also like you to take a close look at the state of the building.  It may even be worth your while asking the local MP Angela Watkinson to join you.

The school urgently need repair to the structure of the building, the school car park needs re tarmacing and improvements and repairs are required to the school kitchen.

What will you be doing as Leader of Havering Council to ensure that funds are made available to provide a rebuild for this school, or if this is not possible at the very least that essential repairs are carried out?

Cllr Micheal White has agreed to visit this school and will ask MP Angela Warkinson to accompany him.   Let's hope and pray that some action is taken to improve the conditions of this school.
